vicki casting oh my god she's perfect, love her with shoulder pads, the big jackets, her hair, she's everything. the teaching sequence was so darling. she's a horse girl ! and she stole roger's e12 sweater. love.

roger in a riding outfit / with a riding crop is everything. thank you <3

wasn't in love with most of the cast; patterson, joe, and julia were all good, though. david was significantly not weird enough although i did love the dead animals. i hated yassified barnabas way less than i thought i would mostly because he was a weird, violent, offputting freak even though he looks like handsome squidward.

one hour 30 minutes later still not really sure who daphne is. possibly mark collins' daughter and this is what i'm truly hoping for.

the interior set design was delightful and honestly a redeeming feature. clock too tiny though.

dialogue was excellent! i've heard barnabas' speech about the global network and exploitation of labor necessary to build collinwood three times and by god if i won't eat it up for a fourth time.

"Collinwood is nothing like I expected either. I read "estate" and "mansion" and I honestly pictured those giant modern McMansion monstrosities rich people are building all the time.

Collinwood is nothing like that. This place *is* huge, but it's huge in the way ancient castles are huge - like there was an actual purpose for all that space when it was built. There's the servant's quarters, the stables, the carriage house, the BALLROOM, everything a rich old European colonial family needed. Well. "Needed".

"We don't use even half of this place" Bridget said, sighing. "Too much work, not enough people. We only live in this little part over here these days." She nodded towards the sixth of the house we were approaching.

"What about the rest of the house?" I asked.

"Empty. Some places..." she glanced over at the unoccupied sections of the mansion.

It's strange, how welcoming the tiny little part of the house that was lit up looked, and how dark and definitely haunted the rest of the same house looked.

"Some places in this house haven't seen a human in centuries." Bridget said."

Hyacinth and Cucumber, also perhaps a tiny bit of Eucalyptus.

She mainly sticks to Dear as her primary term of endearment. She doesn’t use them a lot to begin with, but she knows that hearing it always makes you smile.

C = Cuddles (Do they like to cuddle? How would they cuddle?)

Elizabeth really isn’t a big cuddler, but she doesn’t mind having your head rest in her lap.

D = Domestic (Do they want to settle down? What would they think about living together?)

She’d move you in, day one. It’s not necessarily about settling down so quickly, but she’s busy and having you in Collinwood just makes sense to her.

E = Emotion (How affectionate are they? How do they show affection?)

She’s a bit more reserved in her affection, restricting it to mostly a chaste kiss here and there throughout a given day, though more so when you’re alone together.

F = Flirt (How do they flirt? Are they smooth or awkward?)

She’s pretty smooth. Certainly not awkward, but she has a unique, quiet sort of charm to her.

G = Gifts (Are they a gift giver? What kind of gifts do they give?)

Elizabeth is a practical gift giver. If you need something, she’ll get it for you in a heartbeat. But she doesn’t go overboard on material things that aren’t as useful in day to day life.

H = Hugs (Do they like hugs? How often do they do it? What are their hugs like?)

She’s alright with hugs, especially if she knows you’ve been feeling sad. Hugs are her go to for comforting you, but casually, she’s less enthused about them.

I = I Love You (How fast do they say the L-word?)

It takes a while. She won’t even realize she’s in love for a good amount of time. One day it’ll just dawn on her how comfortable her life is with you and she’ll realize it’s love.

J = Jealousy (How jealous do they get? What do they do when they’re jealous?)

She doesn’t get very jealous. Only Julia talking to you can get her that way. Julia flirts without knowing it, so a stern, warning look is all it takes to make sure she’s kept in check around you.

K = Kisses (What are their kisses like? Where do they like to kiss you?)

Her kisses are always very gentle. She loves to kiss your cheek as well as your lips.

L = Little ones (How are they around children? Would they want some of their own?)

She’s alright with children, good even, but wouldn’t be inclined to have more.

M = Meet (How did they meet you?)

She met you in Collinsport. You both were just going about your days and crossed paths and got to talking.

N = Nurture (Are they good at taking care of you if you’re hurt/sick?)

She’s not the best caretaker you could ask for, but she’s no fool. She’ll get you what you need to be comfortable, but that’s about the extent of it.

O = Out (What’s a typical date night with them like?)

You mainly stay in actually. Make a nice dinner, sometimes together, sometimes not. And finish the night with a favorite drink of choice and a movie.

P = Propose (When do you/they propose? How does the proposal go?)

The proposal is a rather formal discussion. There’s little romance to it actually, but it’s what best suits Elizabeth. And she does take you out for a nice engagement dinner after the fact.

Q = Quirk (What small habit/feature/quirk do they have that you find especially endearing?)

She’ll doze off when she’s reading. Her glasses will be about to fall off the bridge of her nose and she’ll just look so adorable that you don’t want to disturb her.

R = Routine (What does a typical day together look like? Routines, schedules, habits?)

Meeting in passing on and off, and taking meals together when you can. Always dinner though. Elizabeth always makes sure she can spend dinner time with you if nothing else.

S = Security (How protective are they? How would they protect you?)

She’s very protective, but she doesn’t fear much getting at you in Collinwood. She’ll hold your hand out in public just as a way to assure herself that you’re there and safe.

T = Try (How much effort would they put into dates, anniversaries, etc?)

A decent amount of effort. She doesn’t favor being flashy, but you can always tell the loving effort she put into something for your sake.

U = Unique (What’s something they’d only do for you?)

Sing to you. She doesn’t have the greatest singing voice, but you seem to like it when she sings quietly to you after having overheard her in the shower once.

V = Vulnerable (How long does it take them to feel comfortable being vulnerable around you?)

It’ll take her a while to get really comfortable with you and open up. As long as you’re patient and don’t push her, it’ll come in time.

W = Wardrobe (What would they wear to impress you?)

Anything purple or blue. She doesn’t wear a lot of either and she knows you always like seeing her in a bit of color.

X = Xtra (A random headcanon for them.)

She loves desserts. If you bake some for her or even just share some ice cream with her, that’s one of the best ways to her heart.

Y = You (What are some things they would like in a partner?)

Elizabeth would want someone she could trust with anything. Loyalty and honor are big for her and she needs both in a partner to let herself really fall for them.

Z = Zzz (What are their sleep habits?)

She’s a light sleeper. First to wake up at a strange sound. But she’s oh so beautiful when asleep.

Also being a Vampire and trying to help Barnabas settle into the new ways of life. Angelique cursed you out of boredom back in 1942, however you managed to escape unnoticed by the outside world. Finding a position at Collinwood, as soon as you'd set eyes on Barnabas you knew he was one of your kind. Now because he'd been locked away for so long Barnabas was a tiny bit out of touch with the world (okay... more then a bit) so it was up to you to help him along. "Fifteen and no husband?" The pale man question in an almost accusing tone if the speckles of confusement hadn't made his statement reveal it's true meaning. "Barnabas" the girl whispered lightly "She's a child still... times have changed. We must let her grow until she is ready." The pale girl chose her words carefully "There is no rush, she is young and has yet to make her mark on the world. There is plenty of time before we have to worry about that." Y/N sighed smiling at Caroline softly before tugging at the cold hand of the former owner of the estate leading him out of the room before continuing the tour.

CAROLYN: It’s so strange.  There are times when I think I remember, times when I dream and seem to relive it all.  Times when certain things jar my mind.  I see the stillness in the night, a child’s toy.  But I can never put all the fragments together.  I just can’t do it!

Dark Shadows episode 1065: Snooping through Professor Stokes’ private correspondence, Barnabas and Julia learn that Quentin has escaped from a mental institution where he has been confined for the last 25 years.  They also learn that the entire Collins family, except for Quentin and Carolyn, disappeared on “that night” in 1970, and nobody knows what happened to them...

(I love the “mystery’ aspects of 1995, as Barnabas and Julia slowly uncover tiny clues.  A part of me, though, thinks it’s a pity they can’t make use of the electronic resources available in 1995.  Sure, they’d have to use dial-up, but I bet the posters on alt.paranormal would have a theory or three about what happened to Collinwood in 1970!)

1. what is the biggest headcanon deviation from the canon material that you have incorporated into the way you write your muse? why did you come up with it?

that maggie succeeds in killing barnabas is definitely my biggest change. tbh, i didn’t come up with this idea on my own (i was literally inspired to make this blog by this post) but i was immediately taken by the concept. maggie has always been one of my favorite characters, and it kills me how poorly her character was treated by the show after her kidnapping plot was resolved. 

now, i understand why the writers never killed off barnabas, and i acknowledge his importance both as a character and as the stroke of genius that saved the show from cancellation. but as a viewer, it’s maddening that maggie never got the justice she deserved. she’s had her memory of her kidnapping erased twice over the course of the show (which, again, i understand the choice despite not agreeing with it), but then after vicki leaves the show, she’s brought in as the replacement governess – a plot development that makes no sense and leaves the character with a drastically altered personality, as it’s clear that her role now is simply to fill in for vicki. but the greatest insult to injury is that from this point forward, the writers attempt to make barnabas/maggie a thing – again, completely disregarding her original characterization in favor of reducing her to vicki’s role, which had already been greatly diminished since the show moved from a jane eyre-esque gothic to an all-out spook show. after her flashback and subsequent second memory wipe, no mention is made of barnabas’ victimization of maggie ever again. it’s literally swept under the rug and forgotten about, even when maggie falls victim to another vampire.

tldr; maggie evans is an amazing character who deserved so much better, and my canon divergent blog is my attempt of sorts to redeem her later characterization and play her out as the badass that she is.

4. have you made any outright changes to the canon material in order to write your muse the way you wanted (entire scenes you chose to omit, chapters you say never existed, things you assume were never said, etc.)?

again, maggie killing barnabas is something that never happened in canon, but vampire slayer maggie evans is just too good of a concept to pass up. even the audios from big finish realized this – in bloodlust, maggie finally gets to stake somebody! it’s too bad that she’s still way too forgiving of barnabas, even though she remembers everything he’s done to her at this point. her hatred of barnabas is something i keep across all of my verses, up to and including my canon (when she regains her memory) and audio verses.

besides that, i can’t really think of many concrete examples on the spot, although i’m sure there’s other instances. as somebody else in the fandom once put it, dark shadows canon is like a choose your own adventure book. even canon contradicts itself (many, many times) and the show has several storylines taking place in actual parallel universes, so canon is honestly irrelevant as far as i’m concerned. i pick and choose what i like and leave out the rest.

5. what is an aspect of your muse’s canon material or canon existence that you never had the opportunity to explore but really want to?

maggie’s stints at windcliff sanitarium. she was committed there twice, once after the kidnapping, and the other after being attacked by the vampire roxanne drew. i feel that i don’t talk about it enough, and i’d love the opportunity to explore that part of her backstory. also, i really want to delve into her childhood – between her mother’s death and her father’s alcoholism, she dealt with a lot in her formative years. the audiobook clothes of sand goes into both of these aspects, and chronicles her first supernatural experiences with a character called “the sandman” – the memories of whom she has largely suppressed, but who has had a significant impact on her psyche nonetheless.

13. what canon character do you really wish your muse could interact more with?

WILLIE LOOMIS, hands down. he and maggie have such an interesting and tragic dynamic, and he’s the only one who can truly understand what she’s gone through (and vice versa). between the two of them, they share so much trauma. like maggie, willie’s also been screwed over by canon, although not to the same extent, and i’d love to write some threads in which they work through their trauma together.

besides willie, i’d also love to have maggie interact with angelique, carolyn, vicki, david, roger, amy jennings, julia hoffman, nicholas blair, tony peterson, any of the collinwood ghosts (josette, sarah, beth, rachel, daphne, jenny, trask), any of the characters from the audio series (especially kate ripperton, melody and mike devereux, jackie and rhonda tate, ed griffin) – as you can probably tell, i’d be thrilled to interact with ANY dark shadows character. but given how tiny this fandom is, i feel blessed just to have a quentin and now a barnabas!!

During their engagement period, Roger will sometimes ask Carolyn’s help picking out little gifts for V, out of some honest anxiety that he’s not really in touch with the tastes of the Youth. Things like records, dresses, jewelry, hair clips: sometimes with the success, but more often that not they’re more to his niece's taste (but V finds the gesture charming anyway, and it gives Carolyn more options to steal borrow from her closet). he does just as well if not better on his own: old fashioned watches, pearls, silk scarves, French lace lingerie, and books, most of all. he'll occasionally buy her a very nice edition to add to her shelf in the Collinwood library, but what she really likes is being given one of his used books –– annotated poetry anthologies, or marked up old shakespeare. it makes her feel much more intimate with him, and she loves getting a glimpse his mind.

They have one child together: a little girl, Josette Elizabeth Collins, nicknamed “Josie” by Carolyn shortly after she’s born, and the name sticks (much like Vicki did). She resembles V more, especially her nose and mouth, but she has her father’s blue eyes and waving gold hair (this also means she ends up looking a little bit like Laura, but they all keep that observation to themselves). She’s born small and sickly after a rather difficult birth, and remains tiny throughout childhood. But with a household full to give her some TLC, Josie shoots up in height as a preteen. she quickly becomes wayyy taller than Liz, especially once she starts wearing heels, to her aunt's external exasperation at just how fast she's grown.

One childbirth scare is enough, though –– Roger's already come much too close to losing V on several other occasions, as well as having lost his own mother as a result of his birth, to want to risk it again. besides, they already have David, who is enough of a handful on his own, and Rog is getting older, so they mutually decide that he get a vasectomy. you can bet that he fully hams up the recovery period and makes everyone baby him for a week. Liz doesn't fully approve ( it is her brother's branch of the family tree that will continue the name, after all, so she dislikes the idea of not even having the chance of more Collinses ) ... but she has no desire to put V at further risk, either, so she doesn't protest too much.

David is very jealous at the beginning when the baby comes: both Rog and V absolutely dote on her, as does Liz, and Carolyn, who simply delights in being the older cousin / aunt figure to the new baby in the house. So David gets a little impetuous for a while and torments Josie in his way: inventing or summoning ghosts to scare her, slipping the music box into her crib, spooking her at her nap time or dinner. But he grows out of it as Josie grows and he gets more fond, and much more protective of her: he still bugs her as an older brother is wont to do, but rest assured he’s the only one that’s allowed to. David Collins in his teens is not someone you want as an enemy.

As I've alluded to elsewhere, one of V's first big tasks as a new Collins wife that she takes on is the historic restoration of the west wing, which is something she's wanted to do since Burke's death. this is where Roger, V, David, and Josie will stay when it's finished ( another sore point of David's, losing one of his secret play-places ). Barnabas helps –– both in the practical oversight of the project, and in the funding ––  but Roger's pride won't permit him to help too much with the latter. to help offset some of the costs, both of construction and of the upkeep / taxes with having more of the house open, Victoria suggests they open the house up to public tours a few days a week. Roger protests furiously against the idea of having a stream of strangers –– commoners –– in the house, but it's Liz that puts her foot down. she and Vicki personally administer the tours ( being the most knowledgeable about the house, and it and the family history ) including seasonal haunted nighttime tours, where you just might catch a glimpse of a real ghost.
